Marlisa Van Hout is a licensed psychotherapist with 15 years of experience working with adults possessing a broad range of conditions. Her goal is to help people understand themselves and others better, while also developing skills that enable them to create healthier, more enjoyable lives. She is a caring and engaging therapist, who works to help her clients identify their core issues and change their maladaptive thoughts and behaviors.
Ms. Van Hout also has a unique ability to establish a quick rapport with clients, which helps them more easily acclimate to therapy and achieve positive results. She brings a direct but compassionate approach to her client relationships. Ms. Van Hout works with adults and is particularly adept at helping people overcome anxiety and depression.
A lifelong learner, Ms. Van Hout routinely attends national and regional conferences to sharpen her skills and to develop expertise in new and proven therapies. She has studied extensively with Laurel Parnell, PhD, one of the nation's leading experts on EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). This technique is used to help people process and overcome traumas, large and small, in their lives. Ms. Van Hout offers Schema Therapy, which combines cognitive behavioral therapy with psychodynamic concepts to help individuals identify destructive patterns and learn ways to correct them. She also has in depth knowledge of DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) which teaches the invaluable skills of emotion regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness and assertiveness.
Ms. Van Hout joined Integrated Therapy Associates in November 2010 after five years of private practice at Trinity Wellness Center of Wilmington. Prior to joining Trinity in 2005, she spent 10 years in the public sector as a therapist at Southeastern Mental Health of Wilmington.
Ms, Van Hout is a 1984 graduate of University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a BA in Psychology. She earned her Masters in Clinical Psychology from Western Carolina University in 1995 and is a Licensed Psychological Associate.
A native North Carolinian, Ms. Van Hout resides in Wilmington with her family. When she is not working, she enjoys reading and perusing local galleries.
